I have a Unertl 10x as well and have to say the Lyman has slightly better optics and a wider field of view. Took a better than average buck with it last year at 359yds. To give modern performance to these old style scopes, we have utilized modern lens coatings and manufacturing practices. I built up a USMC sniper clone from a sportered NM rifle a few years ago with a 10x Lyman STS and it performs very well. The only difference with our Malcolm Optics is the glass. The company continued in business until WWII, even though some new optical technologies, which would make these telescopic steel tube scopes obsolete.Īs a tribute to William Malcolm, our modern Malcolm vintage reproduction scopes are constructed to same specs with the general look and feel of the original scopes. By the turn of the 20 th Century, Malcolm had become the leading scope manufacturer in the U.S. He understood that a riflescope must be properly constructed to hold zero. In 1855, William Malcolm started building riflescopes. However it would not be until the mid 1800s that rifles became sufficiently accurate to require a telescopic sight. They look almost like butler creek flip caps, Id rather some Tenabrax or something at 1/20th the price. These had all the optical quality that was necessary for a rifle telescope. I suspect people buy them as rhyno said, to make that clone rifle perfectly spec. Do not deal with someone who is wiling to break federal law by shipping to anyone but an FFL. There are also opportunities to get scammed. Good terrestrial telescopes were being built by the early 1700’s. There are opportunities here to find both buyers and sellers of firearms.
